How do you delete files from Basecamp? I want to delete some of the draft videos and resources to free up space, but I don’t want to delete the messages that they are in because I want to be able to go back to those discussions.

Also, are we meeting for class on May 15, the week of finals?

Final Project Pitch – Seth Paine – The Eucharist

I have wanted to make some videos to explore my faith and help explain it for a while now.  I grew up in an Evangelical family, went to Evangelical churches from the time I was born to my early 30’s.  I went to an Evangelical college.  Around the time I turned 30, I began to look into the Catholic Church, and when I turned 34, I was confirmed into the Catholic Church.  It was an interesting process and journey for me and one that was interesting if not confounding to many people close to me, both friends and family who are Evangelicals and people I came to know who are Catholic.

I would like to eventually make a series of 7 videos of the 7 sacraments of the Church, so I am going to do the first of those 7 videos on the Eucharist.  It was an important part of my journey into the Catholic Church, and every day it becomes a stronger force keeping me grounded in my still new Catholic faith. The Eucharist is the center of the Catholic Church and it is what our faith is founded on.

I hope to be able to get some time with Cardinal Sean O’Malley to get some clips of him talking about the Eucharist as well as the priest in my own parish.

This will be mostly an educational film about the Eucharist, but it will also likely include some personal experiences.  Because this is so personal to me, I am going to do this as an individual project because it will have so much of my voice in it.  I don’t know yet if my conversion story will be a significant part of the video or not, I will figure that out as the story develops.

What I see different

I have watched this series for a while now, and I have always thought it would be great to be able to make a series about topics of faith in the same style.  The last couple I have watched in the last week, I can see how things that I have done to edit the group project could be used to make something similar.  It is cool to watch something and see in your head it coming apart and the pieces that went into making it.  It isn’t as much of a mystery anymore.

Divine Intimacy – This is the goal of the journey

I wanted to tell a story of salvation through book titles.  I started off selecting what books I wanted to use.  My first thoughts were to start at a place where I am far from God and through some steps came closer to God at the end.  As I was trying to think of a first picture, the word lost kept coming to mind.  The book Paradise lost was a great one for this book because it is all about the fall of Man away from God.  The end of this book is the beginning of my story.  To skip to the end, the book Divine Intimacy was the perfect book for the end of the story because that is the desire of my heart, to have perfect intimacy with God and I hope to get there some day.  When I found the second book, Surprised by Joy, I thought it was perfect for the second chapter of my story.  We are all lost, but God loves us so much that he finds ways to break into our lives with His love.  C.S. Lewis’ big encounter with God was through joy.  I had hoped to find a book that had something about desiring God because that is also part of the beginning of the journey.  The next book I chose was Fundamentals of the Faith because once we start on our journey, there are a lot of important things for us to learn.  God has found us, but He also desires us to find Him, and He has shown us the way through all of His followers that have gone before us.  The fourth book is The Imitation of Christ.  This is one of the classics on not just knowing about Christ, but really knowing Him intimately and living our life like Him.  And it is the imitation of Christ that leads us into divine intimacy.

When I was setting up the books to take pictures of them, I wanted to use light to bring out the meaning of the books titles.  For Paradise Lost, I had the light coming from the side and a little from behind to cast the cover in darkness.  I also used filters to cast more darkness around the title.  For Surprised by Joy, I had the light shining right on the book and used a filter to give a strong sense of motion that the book is jumping out at you.  For The Fundamentals of the Faith, I wanted the light to look like it was resting on the book, but you had to look harder for it.  The book itself can look dry and old, but the light is still there.  For The Imitation of Christ, I had the light coming from above and focusing on Christ.  I took the picture from below to show the position of humility we need to take in attempting to imitate Christ.  The Divine Intimacy I took with light coming from behind with a long exposure to bathe the book in light showing an otherworldliness to intimacy with God.  This story is based on a journey, starting in darkness, being spurred on to start the journey, taking important steps along the journey, and finding our goal – tension to resolution.
